The local post-punk faves return on their anticipated sophomore album to rail against low-paying promoters and the commodification of art (“Two Fifty”), and Seattle police union boss Mike Solan on the biting defund anthem “Cop Out.” In its less confrontational moments, the twirling psychedelia of “Tiempo” and “Nieve” show the songwriting strides multi-instrumentalists Alaia D’Alessandro and Ulises Mariscal have made since 2019’s well-received “Amorfo.”

This week, it returns with the songs that, when they showed up in my inbox, made me want to hear more. For Alaia D’Alessandro, co-front person of the Seattle-based rock band Tres Leches, along with multi-instrumentalist Ulises Mariscal, the idea is necessary, if not rather difficult. It’s also the thesis of her band’s latest single, “Strangest of Friends.”

Seattle art-punk duo Tres Leches release “Leaving My Light On” today, their debut single with Devil In The Woods. The track is about the positive changes that come to you when you start doing things for yourself instead of trying to prove other people wrong. “Moving to the U.S. from Mexico when I was 14, I didn’t really know anything about the language or the culture,” says the band’s Ulises Mariscal. “Even though there were barriers I still managed to find work and go to school. People would tell me that I wouldn’t make anything of myself and want me to conform to something I wasn’t. That’s what I think about during the part of the lyrics that say, ‘si no te sientas ya veras‘.
