It’s been proven time and time again that, in the music industry, rushing rarely ends up in a positive result. What exactly are we referring to? Well, most specifically, writing and recording. The most forgettable albums are often the ones that were hurried through just so that they could meet a particular, artificial release deadline.
Currently speaking, it’s probable that nostalgia and rock music are linked in more ways than at any point in the genre’s history. Although there’s a built in yearning for the good old days of rock music ever since it had a yesterday to feel nostalgic about, right now this type of music is tied to celebrate itself more than expressing current feelings.
“We are not a band that’s in a hurry,” says Ignacio Gómez Kurth, guitarist of Mexico City rock quartet El Shirota. Now, he wasn’t necessarily talking about the band’s music, although they do have a couple of tracks that sprawl out over the 10 minute mark. Instead he was speaking about the 8 year journey from starting the band to releasing their debut full length album Tiempos Raros on June 12th via Devil In The Woods Records. We sat down with Ignacio (Nacho), David, and Rubén from El Shirota to talk about what went into recording their debut album.

Since they burst onto the scene under there in 2013, and after several years of incessant activity, the Mexican band El Shirota, finally released their first full-length album entitled Rare Times. There are 9 musical pieces that have already had their breakthrough with “La Ciudad” and “A donde voy (Revamp)”.
Eight years had to wait for the first album by the Mexican band and it was really worth it. Ignacio Gómez, Rubén Anzaldúa, David Lemus and Gabriel Mendoza, under their musical identity El Shirota, launch Rare Times internationally. There are 9 musical pieces that have already had their breakthrough with “La Ciudad” and “A donde voy (Revamp)”.
A few days ago the band installed in Mexico City published Rare Times, their first debut, under the label Devil In The Woods.
When guitars seem to become less and less frequent in the music of our continent, projects appear that from the underground have been consolidated through sounds inspired by the always nostalgic 90s, but with a much more refreshing spark. And therein lies its value.
After seven years waiting for his debut album, El Shirota appears with Rare Times, one of the best Mexican rock albums of the last decade.
It is incredible that more than seven years have passed since El Shirota burst onto the music scene of our country with the distorted, raw and unbridled rhythm of his first EP, Chiluca No Es Satélite (2013). Material that in addition to rescuing and renovating the best of post-punk and post-hardcore, specifically that the band traveled to different cities in the country and performed at important music festivals.
A band means passion and sacrifice. Starting a project can be difficult on unsuspected levels. The scale is from fair to bad and there is a possibility of having a terrible time trying. Although many doors have been opened in Mexico and several gaps have been closed, the independent scene has always struggled to do things themselves. Long live the glorious DIY, it must be said. For El Shirota the road has been long. So much so that we had to wait seven years to hear their debut in full length. It was worth it? Entirely.
