Los Blenders talk new LP ‘Mazunte 2016’, creative process and more (Interview)

Mexico City band Los Blenders recently dropped their new album, Mazunte 2016, via tastemaker label Devil In Woods. Since the release of their 2015 debut Chavos Bien, the band has been steadily building up a loyal following of their fans in Mexico and abroad. Though they sing in Spanish, their music and messages connect on a universal level. While the band’s previous albums have been more rooted in punk, their new album finds them venturing into a psychedelic realm with their own heady blend of surf rock, shoegaze, tripped out soul and prog. Ultimately, the album marks an exciting new direction for the band that also speaks to our troubled times.

Mexico City rock phenomenon Los Blenders’ third LP “Mazunte 2016” has something for everyone and is sure to please. This is my favorite album of theirs; I adore their new sound and appreciate the range of topics and moods covered. The songs are also harmonious and fit together like puzzle pieces to create different facets of a whole entity.

Los Blenders are a group of young men from the Mexico City borough of Coapa who have been making music together for close to 10 years. Thought they’ve spent quite a bit of time together, the band has never released a true full length LP until now. Tomorrow, September 25th, the band will finally drop their debut LP Mazunte 2016 via all streaming platforms and for purchase on bandcamp. I was fortunate enough to speak with the band about the new album and you can read the Q&A after the jump. We’ve also been given a new song to stream from the album prior to the release date tomorrow. Check it out!

Q) How would you best describe your sound?

A) I think it’s like psychedelic indie rock.

Q) Who are your greatest musical influences?

A) The Strokes, The Beach Boys, Hombres G, Mgmt.

Q) Tell us the story behind the song “Mazunte 2016.”

A) I wanted to make a crazy surf song that featured the highest number of cliches possible with a crazy guitar solo and a crazy ending. The lyrics are about someone who is having a hard time adapting to his friend’s new personality while trying to flashback to and old vacation they both shared before.

In a Latin music landscape dominated by dembow, it doesn’t hurt to shred every once in a while. Mexico City players Los Blenders tell a gothic post-punk tale about getting extorted by a policeman — a scene that’s all too common in Mexico. “Don’t disappear us,” pleads singer Archie Archer in Spanish. “We just wanted to have fun.” The song is featured on their upcoming third studio album, Mazunte 2016, out September 25th.
